Baseball fans offered pitch perfect way to fill the gap until new season

The baseball season is still some time away, but those who are unable to wait that long for their pitching and catching fix will have an alternative option in just over a month’s time.

Local gaming company Strat-O-Matic announced on December 19 that its latest baseball game will be debuting on its 2013 Opening Day, which is scheduled for February 8.

It looks like printing companies will have plenty on their plates over the next six weeks, as a brand new set of baseball cards is released in time for the new season. Avid gamers and card collectors can get their hands on the newly printed Strat-O-Matic cards during the Opening Day, with doors opening at its Headquarters in Glen Head at 1:00 pm. If the event is anything like last year’s, however, expect long lines of gamers, with fans coming from everywhere – from nearby Glen Cove to as far afield as Boston, Massachusetts. As a result of this, attendees are being asked to arrive by 9:00 am.

The game, which was founded by Hal Richman in 1961, can also now be played online, with games available to buy now and due to be unlocked during the Opening Day. Many purists still prefer to play the traditional way though, with cards and dice adding a tangible feel to the game.

For those who cannot wait for the real thing, the Major League Baseball season is set to get underway on April 1, 2013, although dates are subject to change.
