The Finger Lakes Community College recently started its own vineyard and winery, and is now turning to students of graphic design in and around Fairport for a wine label.
The program is a culmination of the work began when Anthony Road Vineyard, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Cornell University gave permission to the local college to use their vineyards for the study of viticulture. This has now bloomed into a commercial winery that is entirely supplied by the fruits of its students, who have grown 17 different varieties of grape to create the different vintages on offer by the school. These grapes are brought to the campus, which features a teaching winery, as well as aging rooms and wine storage.
The search for a label for these wines is a contest that has been opened to Graphic Design students of FLCC. All in all, six students have submitted entries for the competition, though only one can be the winner and have their work featured on the bottles. The winner will be chosen by the viticulture students themselves, with no feedback from the college staff whatsoever.
The contest to choose the label will end this Friday, December 4, but selling of the wine will not begin for some time yet. Wine enthusiasts should note that the vintages will only be sold by special offer only, so supplies will be extremely limited. Interested parties should check the website or contact the college directly.
