Fairport takes a tour into its past

The Fairport Historical Museum will present an ‘Illuminated History Tour of Greenvale Rural Cemetery’ next month at the Greenvale Rural Cemetery on East Church Street. Vicki Masters Profitt is the designated presenter.

Portraying the lives of well-known past residents in Fairport, actors will play the parts of photographer Frank B. Clench and entrepreneur George C. Taylor as part of the tour.

The Greenvale Rural Cemetery, a designated historic site, has been described as the first such area in the village and was set up in 1825. Surrounded by historical residences, churches, and a nearby canal, the cemetery is presented with Victorian iron fencing and large trees framing the area.

There are more than 1,000 Fairport residents from yesteryear buried in the cemetery including farmers, veterans, and entrepreneurs who contributed substantially to the development and growth of the city.

The historical tour honors the forefathers of the city as the history is explored and explained to tour participants. A range of symbols are found there to allude to the past and present, including weeping willows, urns, lambs, and doves.

Historical tours are often included in a museum’s catalog of events, meaning that catalog printing is common for museums and historical entities who wish to promote their programs.

Visit the Fairport Historical Museum for more information on the June 17 event.
