After the state of New York passed a law requiring anyone born after May 1, 1996 to get a boating safety certificate before operating a motorboat or personal water craft, many younger residents in Fairport felt dry-docked. However, the Fairport Library is coming to the rescue.
The New York State Boater Course is a two-part seminar meant to increase safety and get people back out on the water.
The training is being led by Captain John Johnston, a licensed captain with the U.S. Coast Guard and a certified instructor for marina pro power boats. He will provide over eight hours of instruction for the course, bringing his insight and wisdom from his many years of experience.
The course is divided into two parts with an exam at the end. Participants must attend both parts and then pass the test at the end in order to receive their certificate. The Boater Safety Certificate will be issued by the New York State Parks Department and has no expiration date. The course includes a booklet printing with all the material attendees will need for the course.
The NY State Boater Course will be held on March 18 and 25 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm at the Fairport Public Library, located at 1 Fairport Village Landing. Cost for the course is $25 per person and an extra $10 certificate fee for participants over 18. Anyone looking for more info should contact the library directly.
