Fairport area tapping into tradition at maple festival

The residents or Fairport and the other regions surrounding Genesee are gearing up for the Maple Sugar Festival.

The celebration combines traditional tapping methods, maple cooking, and pancake baking to help bring the past alive.

The event kicks off with a pancake breakfast, includes sausage, unlimited pancakes, and maple syrup, as well as milk, tea, coffee, and hot cocoa to drink. Tickets to the breakfast are separate from the admission to the festival.

The festival itself starts with a hike through the Maple History Trail. Attendees will witness how the collection of maple sap has changed over time, from taps and buckets to modern collection tubes and machinery. People at the event will also get the opportunity to try their hand at using traditional tools to tap their own maple tree and carry buckets of sap on a shoulder yoke. They will also get to meet the tinsmith and cooper who crafted the buckets and tools. Maple cotton candy and maple popcorn will be available for purchase, and refreshments will also be served at the Hosmer’s Inn Tavern.

The Maple Sugar Festival is on Saturday and Sunday March 19 and 20 at the Genesee Country Village and Museum in Mumford. The pancake breakfast begins at 9:00 am and the rest of the events begin at 9:30 am and go until 4:00 pm. Tickets cost $10 for adults and are free for children under 18. Admission to the pancake breakfast is $8.50 for adults and $6.50 for children between 3 and 18. Anyone interested should check the Flyers or the website for more details.
