Fairport afloat for canal days

The village of Fairport is putting the finishing touches on one of its premier art festivals. Fairport Canal Days is a weekend-long celebration of water, art, and family-friendly

fun all set against the backdrop of the Erie Canal.

Now in its 40th year, over 200,000 people attend the event annually. The art festival itself is juried, meaning that each piece will be judged and prizes will be awarded at the end of the event. Not that this should discourage potential collectors, as plenty of art and crafts will still be available for purchase. The art represented ranges from painting and sculpture to mixed media, graphic design, and textile. A large number of local artisans have already signed up including Braddock Bay Gallery, Moon Rabbit Press, Glass Elegance, Sampson Metal Works, and Shibumi Silks.

Aside from the art, there will also be a lot of entertainment options available. The weekend will open with a chicken barbecue, and it closes with a duck race. Visitors can purchase tickets to buy a plastic duck for the race, which includes the possibility of some incredible prizes including $1,000, an iPad air, or iTunes gift cards. All proceeds from the race go to FPMA Beautification Fund. In the evenings visitors can also check out Canal Nights, where live bands such as Chet Catallo and the Cats and the Tommy Brunett Band will be playing.

Fairport Canal Days will take place on June 3,4, and 5. The event opens at 4:30 p.m. on June 3 and will open at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free to Canal Days, but there is a ticket price of $5 to visit Canal Nights. Anyone interested in visiting should visit the website for more information.
