The great house
The area is named for Robert Murray, who came to Pennsylvania from Ireland in 1732, then went to North Carolina before finally settling in New York in 1753. In approximately 1762, Murray rented land from New York City to establish a farm and a great house, which he called Inclenberg, but which most people called simply Murray Hill.
The mansion was in fact built on a hill, had verandas on three sides, and was approached from the Boston Post Road through an avenue of stately trees. The mansion burned in 1835 but the legend continues, as the Daughters of the American Revolution have placed a plaque on a building that stands where the center of the farm was located.
Mrs. Murray is legendary in her own right. Stories claim that she invited British officers to tea and entertained them with stories, while some 4,000 American troops under Israel Putnam escaped to the north and joined George Washington.
The Murray Hill Preservation Association, which seeks to protect the character of the neighborhood, might consider working with brochure printers to create a booklet about the house and the family that gave its name to the area.
The New York and Harlem Rail Road
In 1833, the New York and Harlem Rail Road laid its right of way through Murray Hill. The biggest obstacle to construction was the hill itself, and the answer was to cut through it so locomotives could bypass the hill. In 1850, the city allowed the cut to be roofed over, creating the Park Avenue Tunnel. Eventually, the tunnel was relined and enlarged, and changed over to auto use in 1937.
In the mid-20th Century, Murray Hill was home to the city's elite, but many of the wealthiest New Yorkers moved out of the neighborhood and up towards Central Park, leaving Murray Hill solidly upper middle class. Interestingly, new businesses began to move into the area, especially high-end retailers of ladies' merchandise.
