New site finally found for boardwalk bathrooms

After two years of contention in Brighton Beach, the location for bathrooms replacing boardwalk equivalents destroyed by Superstorm Sandy has been decided upon.

Originally, the plan was to place the new replacement bathrooms in the same locations as the ones that had been destroyed. However, for those living in the Oceana condominium development, this was not acceptable.

Due to the new comfort stations being elevated to the level with the boardwalk, residents objected, saying they would block the view. Additionally the potential danger during a bad storm of the bathrooms being turned into projectiles was brought up.

Following the destruction of almost all of the Riegelmann Boardwalk facilities in 2012, the New York City Parks Department began replacing them at their original positions in 2013. The bathroom installations suffered construction delays, giving the condominium residents time to file a lawsuit.

As a result, the planned location of the bathrooms in question is to be about 250 feet west of its previous location, placing it near the Shorefront YM-YWHA.

The proposed change in location, however, does not sit well with Shorefront Y officials. Concerns about the proximity of the comfort stations to its outdoor playground were among the YM-YWHA’s concerns.

Getting a government department or agency to reverse a decision takes a lot of organizing and the services a flyer printing service.
