Brighton Beach residents traveling the Shore Road will soon see some changes, as work to improve the view from the promenade is carried out this summer.

The Community Board 10 park committee was informed on May 14 of a plan by the Parks Department to clear out overgrown and invasive plants between 95th Street and Third Avenue along the Shore Road.

Parks official Martin Maher pointed out at the meeting that the project would enable those using the benches along the Shore Road to enjoy a view of the harbor all year round. The way things stand now, the harbor is only visible from the promenade after the leaves are gone and the plants have died back during winter.

Parks planner Michele White says the department will remove some large trees that are obscuring the view along with some small invasive species that will be hand-cleared. The idea is to create several “view corridors”. Postcard printing services will presumably see increased business as photographers take advantage of the new vistas being opened up.

After the trees have been cut down, their stumps will remain because, in addition to being costly to remove, they help hold the hillside in place. The replanting of the hillside will not begin until next spring, ideally in the early part of the season before the sun becomes too intense for the young fledgling plants.
