Coney Island hot dog eating contest ends in upset

The annual hot dog eating competition at Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island had a surprising conclusion as Matt Stonie ended the hopes of a ninth win for Joey “Jaws” Chestnut.

Thousands gathered on July 4, including many from Brighton Beach, to watch the popular event, which was covered by ESPN. In addition to fans of the sport, at least one of whom came dressed as a life-sized hot dog, animal rights protestors showed up as well bearing Signs with anti-meat slogans.

Often, events such as this one prompt various groups to seek out brochure printers to promote their particular cause where a large crowd has gathered, whether they are in favor of or against the goings-on.

On the elevated stage, the crowd watched as 23 year-old Stonie, weighing only 125lbs, ate 62 hot dogs including buns, which two more than consumed by Chestnut. The third-placed competitor was some way behind, downing 35 hot dogs.

Chestnut, 31, weighs 230lbs and set the world record in 2013 by downing 69 franks. Last year however, he only was able to consume 61, which was still enough to win. Following last year’s victory, Chestnut made a public proposal to his long-time girlfriend, but the two are no longer a couple.

First prize was a mustard-colored championship belt and $10,000 in prize money.
