What's Happening in Brooklyn, NY…

Brighton Beach series explores world of fungi

Mycology is the study of fungi, and a Brighton Beach activity series will offer an introduction to these essential organisms.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden will be running a series of workshops focused on the fungi that call New York home. Everyone will learn how to identify some of the more commonly seen toxic and edible species, and the registration fee is $145 each.

The instructor for the session will explore the vital role fungi play in their ecosystem, including how many plants have close mycorrhizal associations with a variety of other organisms. Their overall ecology will be discussed, and their cultural history is also on the agenda. A walk in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden will be included with each of the three installments. Those interested need to register in advance, and a discount will be available for Garden members. Each workshop will last for two hours.

Foraging and other nature-based classes can be a fun way to learn about the environment. Field guides and ID tip sheets for a session can be prepared by stationery printers, and may include full-color photos and other graphics.

This three-part series offering an introduction to fungi and the role they play in the ecosystem will kick off on Saturday, July 12. It will continue on the next two Saturdays, July 19 and 26, at Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
