Those new to the pastime of open water swimming may want to make sure they attend an upcoming Brighton Beach area workshop.
The Coney Island Brighton Beach Open Water Swimmers group (CIBBOWS) has plans to host a session that will introduce the basics of this aquatic hobby, led by an experienced CIBBOWS instructor. Each of the swimmers will start off with a safety orientation before they hit the waves, and the participants will be able to hone their skills and gain new ones during the activity.
The group will get practice in skills such as water entry, treading water, floating, and swimming comfortably, all while being aware of their surroundings. They will learn about safety issues such as rip tides, undertows and other dangerous currents, and will also find out what the various hazard flags often seen at the beach mean. There will be other topics on the agenda as well, although the organizers explained that it is not a class for those looking to learn to swim.
Organizing a function like this often includes having waivers and other business documents prepared. These can be ordered from area Stationery printers.
The CIBBOWS group has made arrangements to host this workshop on July 4. Registrants will meet at Brighton 4th Street at its scheduled start time of 10:15 am.
