What's Happening in Brooklyn, NY…

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count gives the public a chance to show some love to their feathered friends, and this citizen-scientist activity is seeking input from Brighton Beach birders.

This activity, which is the longest running event of its kind in the country, draws participants from across America. It gives researchers and others a snapshot of how birds are doing, and this data is used in a variety of ways.

The Brooklyn Board Count will take place at several sites in the community, such as cemeteries, parks and coastal areas. All skill levels are welcome for what could be an introduction to environmental stewardship for kids. Everyone who registers will be able to join a team that visits a site of interest to them, and as the day draws to a close, the birders will gather at Prospect Park Boathouse to compile their findings and enjoy a potluck dinner.

Many people would like to get involved in activities that help the environment, but they may not know how to get started. Groups that offer opportunities for the public to learn about nature may be promoted using materials prepared by a local flyer printing company.

Brighton Beach residents have been asked to help make the 1122nd Audubon Backyard Bird Count a success, and more details can be found on its online description. It is scheduled for December 18th, and the locations will be released at a later date.
