This year the Henderson area is putting the ‘arrrrr’ in Season’s G’arrr’eetings with the Shipwreck! Pirates and Treasure exhibit at the Springs Preserve.
The exhibition features authentic artifacts brought up from the bottom of the ocean. Gold and silver coins, porcelain vases, and rare glassware will all be on display. To get a feel for some of the weather that sank these ships, a booth has been built that will simulate category one hurricane force winds for anyone inside.
Visitors can also hoist the Jolly Roger and learn the stories and fates of various famous pirates such as Edward Low, Blackbeard, and William Kidd. For atmosphere, a realistic pirate corpse can be found hanging out in a gibbet.
All of the artifacts are provided by Odyssey Marine Exploration, and a large portion of the exhibit is also dedicated to showing the organization works. The team has discovered over 250 shipwrecks in the English Channel alone, and most of its work occurs entirely under water using remote-operated vehicles. A model of one of these vehicles has been built, and visitors can try picking up a few coins with the robot’s claw hand.
Shipwreck! Pirates and Treasure will be at the Springs Preserve located at 333 S. Valley View Blvd. from now until January 31. Ticket prices for Nevada residents are $9.95 for adults and $8.95 for children and seniors. Anyone interested in more info should check the website.
