Henderson home horticulturalists offered workshop

An upcoming event will show that it is possible to grow roses even in the desert heat.

The Gardening in Small Places: Roses workshop is being offered by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension office. This continuing education class will introduce home horticulturalists to a wide variety of roses suitable for growing in Henderson and other communities in the Mojave Desert. Master Gardener Dr. Judith Kafantaris will be sharing her expertise when it comes to these sought after flowering plants.

During the session, for which tickets are $10, the participants will be introduced to the thousands of rose cultivars that can successfully be grown in the local climate. The facilitator will discuss care tips for these flowering plants so that they will be healthy and boast large, colorful blooms. The basics of pruning will be reviewed, and questions from the attendees will be welcome.

Home gardeners are often eager to discover more about their hobby, and events like this give them a chance to do so. Offering these learners “gardening cheat sheets” and other educational materials will give them a leg up, and these can be prepared by area Stationery printers.

This workshop focused on successful rose growing in the desert will take place on Saturday, October 16, running from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon. The location will be 8050 Paradise Road in Las Vegas.
