Mixed-use development opens in Newark
The Ballantine, a mixed-use development that is six stories tall on the site of the Ballantine Brewery in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark at Ferry and Christie streets is now open.
The project was developed by the Shorewood Real Estate Group based in New York partnering with Bridge Investment Group. The cost for the development was $88 million and revitalizes an historic site that was once the home of one of the oldest beer brands in America. It was the main distribution site and brewery for P. Ballantine & Sons Brewing Co. from 1840 to 1972.
There are 280 apartments in the new development with units of one, two, and three bedrooms at both affordable and market rates. There are also modern amenities and 2,600 square feet of retail space on the ground floor. It will include a new food market and on-site parking.

Lawrence Davis, CEO of Shorewood Real Estate Group, said that the Ballantine is a significant milestone in the growth of the city as it integrates the historic significance of the site with a modern vision for the northern edge of the Ironbound neighborhood.
