Worlds fastest sprinter to be inducted into Hall of Fame

Fair Lawn sporting legend Dr. Dave Sime, is to be posthumously honored later in the year by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).

Dr. Sime will be inducted into the Gallagher Bollinger Inc. Hall of Fame, along with five other sporting individuals, on December 5 in an award ceremony to be held at Pines Manor, Edison. Sports fans may want to include the date on their Calendars, as reservations for the event are still available.

Considered by sports experts to be the world’s fastest sprinter during the 1950s, Sime initially played football and baseball while at High School and University. He did not run track until 1956, when he was spotted as an exceptional runner by his baseball coach at Duke University, and his great potential as a world class sprinter was recognised.

Throughout his sporting career, Sime held nine world records and won silver at Rome in 1960, narrowly missing out on gold twice. In an interview afterwards, Sime said:

“I was very, very disappointed.”

Sime chose not to follow a professional sporting career, preferring instead to pursue a career in medicine. After graduating from Duke, he qualified as an ophthalmologist and was highly successful in his field, which included pioneering work on intraocular lens transplants.

The NJSIAA Hall of Fame receives nominations from high schools throughout the state, with the final choice decided by committee.
