The volunteer emergency service workers in Fair Lawn will now be awarded an annual stipend of $2,000 as recently approved by the Borough Council.
Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove commented that this measure was an important step in keeping younger firefighters in town and helping them with the high cost of living in the Borough.
The annual stipend will be paid out quarterly in amounts of $500 and given to those firefighters who attend 35% or more of the calls or drills. Those who have an attendance rate of 25% to 34%, would earn $250 a quarter, for a total of $1,000 per year.
Member of the Ambulance Corps would be under a different schedule and receive payments each quarter ranging from between $100 to $500, depending on the percentage of calls they attend and hours of service. Those who attend over 100 hours in a quarter would earn the $500 stipend.
Mayor Kurt Peluso said that this program “protects the volunteer participation now and in the future.” He added that there is a greater time commitment for these volunteers as the training has increased from one moth to six months at the Bergen County Fire Academy in Mahwah.
Business Cards could be offered to such volunteers to also show appreciation of their devotion to the community.
