Semi-finals reached by local percussion group

The Fair Lawn Indoor Percussion Ensemble traveled to the WGI Percussion World Championships in Dayton, Ohio earlier this month, and drummed up something of a name for itself.

At the April 10-12 event, there were more than 50 independent groups and 90 scholastic ensembles, and the Fair Lawn group was only one two schools from New Jersey.

The two types of groups are assigned to skill levels for competitions in A level, Open, and World Class. General effect, music, and visual criteria are used to judge the groups. Acrobatics and stunts are often part of the World Class sector.

The Fair Lawn Ensemble performed in the A class of the scholastic ensembles on the opening day as one of 54 units. The performers moved onto the semi-final field as one of 32 units and finished a creditable 15th overall.

Despite narrowly missing out on becoming one of the 12 groups in the final, program director Jamie Szeinberg was very proud of his students and noted remarked that this group was the first from Fair Lawn to compete at this Championship.

The Fair Lawn Friends of Music, a parent-teacher group that supports all programs related to music in the district, is the primary means of support for the ensemble. The parent volunteers design sets and transport equipment onto trucks for the performers. The fundraisers it regularly sets up are just the sort of thing that often gets promoted with the help of professional Print companies.
