The film, titled ‘Supergirl’, tells the story of Naomi’s journey as she makes a name for herself in the world of competitive powerlifting. Naomi’s career started at the age of nine when she broke female world weightlifting records for her class. She has since gone on to win seven other titles at national level and break her previous world record a further three times.
She has lifted over double her own weight and believes the sport is more about mental ability than physical. Filmmaker Auritt agrees, saying of Naomi:
“She has this incredible willpower and motivation and drive. I think if she didn’t have that inner strength, she wouldn’t be able to lift weights.”
Powerlifting is divided into three categories, or ‘lifts’ as they are known: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift. Each features a different technique in lifting weights. Competitors are entered into ‘classes’ depending on gender and bodyweight. Naomi has just moved to a different weight class for competition purposes.
Still only 15 years old, Naomi regularly check Calendars for the next powerlifting competition. She trains daily in the basement of her family home, juggling school commitments and the everyday life of a teenager.
