The event is being organised by Assunta Trischka, a retired teacher, with the support of Fair Lawn Mayor, John Cosgrove.
The event is in aid of cancer research and the money raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Over $4.3bn has been raised over the past 70 years by the society and invested in cancer research.
Teams will walk through the night around the local high school track, from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am, with at least one team member on the track at any time. The idea behind the relay is to highlight the relentless nature of the disease, and there will also be various activities and entertainment running alongside the relay.
Organisers are planning a ‘kick off’ event on February 16 to boost the number of teams and raise awareness of the main relay in May. Residents may want to look for Flyers and Posters promoting the event and giving further details.
Mayor Cosgrove said:
“I’ve seen the generosity of Fair Lawn residents before and I know that they will come out and support the cause.”
With the relay scheduled for May 6, it is hoped that the next few months will give the teams plenty of time for fundraising via sponsorship and donations.
