Local amateur radio enthusiasts had cause for celebration in Fair Lawn this month. Not only was it the 60th anniversary of the Fair Lawn Amateur Radio Club (FLARC), but the club has also been recognised by the Borough Council for its assistance and public service.
During a presentation evening, Mayor John Cosgrove praised FLARC for “long and distinguished service” within the community, especially in times of crisis, and awarded the group a proclamation declaring October FLARC’s 60th anniversary month.
Digital technology, the internet, and social media have become the 21st Century’s usual mode of communication, but the radio club keeps in mind that a return to a tried, trusted, and dependable form of communication could be the only answer in the event of these systems failing. It is with these objectives that enthusiasts around the world, like FLARC, are among the 700,000 amateur radio licensees now existing in the U.S. alone.
Part of the town’s emergency services, Fair Lawn Amateur Radio Club is made up of a dedicated group of enthusiasts, some of whom were there at the beginning in 1956.
They are keen to encourage new members and offer instruction and help with licensing to interested parties. Marketing services may need to be employed to encourage new visitors to the club, who will be ensured of a warm and informative welcome.
