New trustee to join Fair Lawn education board

A new trustee of the Board of Education of Fair Lawn will soon be sworn in. Julie Mahan replace Dr. Emily Cohen, who moved out of state this summer and resigned prior to the end of her term. Mahan currently works as a social worker in the Ringwood Public Schools.

Such announcements are often made known throughout the community with banner printing.

Mahan was planning to run for the three-year term opening in November, and thought the vacant seat would be a good opportunity. She said that her plan is not to make this a short-term job but to be in it for long haul given the current nature of education. She added that she is also a parent and is interested in not only academics, but the social and emotional education children receive during their time at school.

This is a challenging time for the Fair Lawn Public Schools as classes are being held remotely and will not open for in-person education until Monday, October 19. A number of parents demonstrated against the all-remote learning option last month, TapInto.net reports.

Mahan has said that being a trustee is not easy and the current situation only exacerbates the challenges that face the district. Mahan said she plans to collaborate with other members of the board in a professional, respectful, and thoughtful manner.
