Partnering with the Fair Lawn Recreation Department, the Knights of Columbus, and the Cosmos Club, the Fair Lawn Holiday Celebrations Committee will be holding a Columbus Day Voyage Map, Poem, and Essay Contest for children in grades kindergarten through eight.
Schools can look to poster printing to make students aware of such contests and encourage their participation.
Submissions for the contest can be a creative map relating the story of the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the New World. The maps can include attire worn by explorers, a spyglass telescope, and the three ships. Imaginative materials like Play-Doh or plasticine, posterboard, and photographs can be used to create the map.
An original essay or poem or essay can be also submitted that also describes the voyage made to the New World. The essay should not be more than 500 words.
Submissions of maps, poems, and essays can be made in person at the Fair Lawn Recreation Department or sent by email to the department. Submissions should include the name of the student, their address, phone number, grade, and the school they attend.
The final day for submissions is this coming Thursday, October 6. Winners will be notified on Friday, October 7. Following this, there will be a program at the Knights of Columbus on Monday, October 10 at 7:30 pm where the winners of the contest will receive a prize.
