The Economic Development Corporation (EDC) of Fair Lawn will be conducting a survey of the borough to determine the feasibility of creating a Special Improvement District (SID) across the town.
A SID is an area which has been designated by the municipality in which a special tax or assessment is rendered on property in the district so that the general and economic welfare of the district and the municipality can be promoted. Steve Weinstein, Chairman of the EDC, said that the borough already has two SIDs, Broadway and River Road. Weinstein added that the borough is 89th in the county for economic health and ninth for affordability.
The EDC will be meeting with representatives of the proposed corridors, which include Radburn/Fair Lawn Avenue, Columbia Heights, Saddle River Road, Morlot Avenue/Banta Place, Maple Avenue, and the 208 Corridor. A survey will be conducted that will create a list of concerns and will go out to businesses in these areas to get their responses to support the development of the SID. Print shops are often used to create such printed surveys that volunteers can use to hand out when they individually visit such businesses.
Executive director of the EDC, Maggie Peters, developed the survey from similar surveys used in 10 other municipalities. She commented that such improvement districts typically create a more workable and vibrant downtown.
