Fair Lawn offers free trees for residents

The tree planting program sponsored by the borough of Fair Lawn will be continuing this year.

The planting of a tree in the public right of way in front of their home can be requested by residents. Although the program is free of charge, homeowners are requested to water the trees and take care of them on a regular basis for the first few years.

John Cosgrove, Deputy Mayor of Community Affairs, has encouraged Fair Lawn residents to take advantage of this free tree program. Jim Van Kruiningen, Borough Manager, added that in the last three years, over 275 trees have been planted by the borough in the public right-of-way. Government organizations often turn to flyer printing services to inform residents of such programs and encourage participation and donations to such programs.

The Department of Public Works needs to be contacted by residents who are interested in having a tree planted in front of their house. These residents are then placed on a consideration list and are then visited by an employee of the Shade Tree Division to conduct a site visit. The location and appropriate species of tree is then recommended by the employee.

Trees are typically planted in the fall or spring, as these seasons are the best time with regard to precipitation and temperature for trees to grow.
