Residents in Fair Lawn are getting ready for the city's first ever Relay for Life.
The well-known fundraiser is a 24-hour event designed to raise funds and awareness for the fight against cancer.
Relay for Life is the primary fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. It began 32 years ago when Dr. Gordy Klatt spent a full day walking around a track in order to raise funds for cancer research. His walk raised $27,000, but the concept caught on and since then the relay has gone on to raise over $5bn globally. Over 3.5 million people around the world participate in Relay for Life events.
The Fair Lawn relay will last for 24 hours, beginning in the evening. After the opening ceremony, the first lap will be completed by survivors and people currently affected by cancer. The second lap will then involve people providing care for those facing cancer, including loved ones. Afterwards, teams will take to the track and will have one team member making laps continuously through the night, signifying that cancer never sleeps. Luminarias will be lit after sundown to represent those lost in the fight against cancer. A total of 35 teams are participating with a fundraising goal of $55,000 for the event. To help raise these funds, many of the teams have created special Promotional Products and held dinners.
The Fair Lawn Relay for Life will be held from 6:00 pm on May 6 to 6:00 am to May 7. Attendance is free to the public. Anyone looking to donate money or learn other information should visit the webpage.
