Fair Lawn educators discuss $25m school referendum

This year 2018 Fair Lawn educators are in talks over a multimillion dollar referendum with residents to upgrade public schools.

The district is growing rapidly, and Superintendent Ernest Palestis says that the $25m expansion is needed due to the growing student population in the region.

The school district has 5,025 students. It is expected to add about 100 new students every year. Most of the elementary schools are too crowded, with many having 25 students per classroom, and teachers have explained that overcrowded classrooms make it hard to give students individual attention.

The Board of Ed hired two different demographic companies to conduct studies. The district expects to have 500 new kids in five years.

This project will expand both Thomas Jefferson and Memorial Middle Schools. Fifth graders will be transferred to the middle schools.

The renovation will add 14 new classrooms to Thomas Jefferson and a general purpose room. It will add nine classrooms to Memorial and a new media center.

Overall, the plan includes renovations to the middle school cafeterias, elevators, and air conditioning.

Educators have been holding several public meetings this year to explain their proposal to Fair Lawn residents.

Fair Lawn residents are scheduled to vote on this referendum on March 13. The area has Print shops that can help schools, clubs, associations, PTAs, businesses, and nonprofit organizations with Promotional Products for fundraising or marketing.
