With financing scheduled to be confirmed this month, a new affordable housing project for senior citizens in Fair Lawn is expected to begin construction in April.
The project is behind Autozone and CVS on River Road on a piece of property three acres in size and will provide 85 apartments in a three-story building. Tom Toronto is the president of the Bergen County United Way and one of the two developers of the project.
The idea for the project goes back to 2013 but Judy Verrone, Fair Lawn Borough Attorney, said that there have been many changes in the project in the past six years, mostly related to financing. Toronto said the project was originally going to be funded through money set aside for Hurricane Sandy, but the state then decided otherwise. Now that these funding hurdles have been overcome, the construction process can begin, Toronto added.
Brochure printing can be used to provide more detailed information for residents about such projects, including apartment size, amenities, and proximity to shops and restaurants.
Mayor Kurt Peluso expressed concerns about whether residents of Fair Lawn would be afforded first opportunities on the units. Toronto said that that is under control of the state but typically residents of the town are attracted to such projects as they want to remain close to the amenities with which they are already familiar.
