A grant of $537,000 has been awarded to Fair Lawn by the New Jersey Historic Trust to help restore the historic Naugle House on Dunkerhook Road.
The house is from the Dutch Colonial era and was built in 1740. These funds will enable phase two of the restoration efforts to begin. The efforts will focus on renovations of the interior. Officials from Fair Lawn will also be using some of the funds, as well as an award of $120,000 from the county, to finish the exterior work of the building. Mayor Gail Rottenstrich said that the borough is also seeking grants for improving the landscaping on the property.
Officials from the borough are looking to turn the iconic building into a community meeting space so that the public can be educated about the American Revolution and the underserved communities that lived in the area many years ago. Plans also call for meeting rooms for local organizations to be part of the restoration process. Rottenstrich hinted that a concession area could be added, as well as a coffee shop.
Banner printing can be used at such sites to inform residents of ongoing projects and their historic and unique features.
Rottenstrich hopes the project will be completed in 2026 in time for the 250th anniversary of the United States.
