Campaign brings books to disadvantaged children

The annual ‘Books in a Bag’ campaign, held by the Business Volunteer Council of the Volunteer Center of Bergen County and designed to provide access to Books for low-income families, is underway and running for the rest of the month.

Both companies and individuals living in Fair Lawn, and in the communities surrounding the Volunteer Center in Hackensack, can participate in a campaign to bring the joy of reading to a child.

Companies that wish to participate received a toolkit with complete instructions on how to implement the program. Individuals can purchase Books by going online to the organization’s website. These Books will be shipped to the Center and then put together in Backpacks.

Children enrolled in the Mentoring Youth and Mentoring Moms programs will then be given the Books. They are needed for youngsters beginning in preschool and running through all levels of high school.

On Read Across America Day on March 2, the Books that are collected will be delivered to the children by the organization’s volunteers who will read the Books to the children.

Since this campaign was started in 2000, the Center may have used a local Print company to Print Flyers and mailers to send out to the community to spread the message of the campaign and the need for book donations, as 75,000 Books have been distributed to 15,000 children in low-income families during that period of time.
