Bridge in Fair Lawn opens ahead of schedule

The Fair Lawn Avenue Bridge has reopened earlier than expected, following over two years of reconstruction work.

The bridge passes over the Passaic River and connects Paterson and Fair Lawn. The project saw the existing bridge replaced with a continuous structure that has two spans and has a length of 270 feet. The roadway is 40 feet wide, which is the same as the width of Fair Lawn Avenue. News of such openings is often disseminated throughout a town with flyer printing.

There are three lanes on the bridge. One is one left and right-turning westbound lane, another lane going westbound, and one left-turn westbound lane. Local aid from the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the federal North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority provided funding for the project. Construction on the bridge began in March 2021 when Passaic County determined the bridge was functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. The County noted that the condition of the substructure, the superstructure, and the geometry of the bridge were unsatisfactory.

Mayor Kurt Peluso said that the bridge was not expected to be completed until late fall of this year. Assemblywomen Lisa Swain expressed her gratitude that the bridge was opened early and praised the engineers and contractors for their work. Swain, a former mayor, said that opening the bridge early will be of benefit for businesses in the area, and for the economy.
