Seniors who are interested in protecting themselves will have a chance to learn self-defense techniques at an upcoming class in Edison.
The program will offer older adults the chance to learn the correct methods to protect themselves should it be necessary. Organizers say the class is both interactive and fun, and will allow seniors to learn strategies to defend themselves and get away from dangerous situations.
The techniques that will be demonstrated in the class do not require any special flexibility or strength, and they are effective, quick, and simple. They include how to react when weapons are present, what to do if physical force is used, deception, and RAD (Recognize, Avoid, Defend) techniques. There will also be a presentation of safety tips for seniors.
The program is the brainchild of Edison resident Bob Matland, who once owned Metuchen's Black Belt Institute. Matland has been teaching tai chi at the institute, Edison's JCC, and the Edison Senior Center, since 1999. Organizers of events like this can use poster printing to develop illustrations of the techniques taught.
The workshop, entitled ‘Senior Self Defense’ is set for 7:00 pm on February 11. The Edison Senior Center is the location of the class, and can be found on Woodbridge Avenue. The event is free, and open to all residents of Edison. However, participants will need to pre-register by calling (732) 248-7345.
