The PiscatawayREADS program is currently underway in its seventh year in the Piscataway Township School District, which is just a short distance from Highland Park.
According to the K12 Curriculum Supervisor of Literacy and Humanities, Robert Coleman, the program is designed to encourage literacy to enable success in life and school and help guide cultural and social interactions. The theme for this year’s program is “Inspire”.
Free age-appropriate Books are given to students in the district and those in all grades must make a commitment to read the Books. Coleman sees this as a way to encourage reading among children of all ages, from pre-school to high school, and help to bring the community together. He hopes that by emphasizing the importance yet making it fun, kids will want to read.
Teachers offered their suggestions for the Books and then Coleman and Lindsay Barna, Literacy Coach for the District, narrowed down the list to five Books—one for grades kindergarten to two; one for grade three; another for grades four and five; and one for middle and high school students. Coleman said they were looking for more contemporary Books, so the list includes graphic novels and picture Books.
Newsletter printing is one way the district can inform the community about the program, its goals and aspirations, and the specific Books that are being used in the program.
