Edison to partner with water company and build community center

Tom Lankey, the mayor of Edison, delivered a State of the Township address recently, and announced that the city is teaming up with a water company, which will manage the town’s wastewater and water.

According to Lankey, Edison Township is planning to sign an agreement with Suez North America, through which the company would manage Edison’s wastewater and water, although the ownership of the two systems would remain with Edison. At present, the township manages its wastewater, but the American Water Company manages its water.

The lease would be a long-term agreement that puts Suez in charge of the operation of the two systems, and takes the burden off of Edison to fund the systems, which are aging. Lankey also said the agreement would mean service to customers would improve, and there would be money to improve the infrastructure.

The deal would cost $811m over 40 years, but there would be an upfront payment of $100m, which would give Edison money to pay down debts, and build a new community center. Officials can use flyer printing to create a mailer to outline developments such as this for residents.

The center is projected to comprise 10,000 square feet, and will be located on Route 1, at the Edison Town Square, The new building will take over from the Stelton Community Center, which closed last October.
