Cherry Hill workshop to introduce beekeeping

Backyard beekeeping has become popular in recent years, and Cherry Hill residents who are considering adding a hive to their property may want to sit in on two upcoming area workshops.

The Burlington County Agricultural Center provides the area with a variety of learning opportunities, and two of its classes planned for this spring will be geared towards amateur apiarists. The facilitator will be Millcreek Apiary’s Jason Schoff, and honey tasting is included on both agendas.

In the first class, Schoff will introduce the basics of beekeeping, including how a hive works, various breeds of bees, and also how they overwinter. There will also be a discussion of threats faced by both domesticated and wild bee species.

During the second session, the attendees will be treated to a deeper dive into the hive. The participants will suit up and see the inner working of a honeybee colony, including how and why inspections should be made.

A continuing education class gives the public a chance to learn about a new hobby. Copies of handouts and other learning materials can be sourced from an area brochure printing supplier.

The Burlington County Agricultural Center will be offering the first of its beekeeping classes on April 22, and the second is scheduled for May 21. They will be held at 500 Centerton Road in Moorestown, and those who are interested can sign up for one or both sessions.
