Soldiers old and young unite on the snow
An event was recently held in North Conway, showing that the older generation of skiers still has what it takes to conquer the slopes.
The Hannes Meister Cup Race was held at Cranmore Mountain, and it saw both former and younger members of the 10th Mountain Division engage in some friendly competition and make connections based on their love of the sport.
The soldiers were part of a group that started out as a unit intended to be winter combat specialists. Though this is no longer the case, they still hold the contest each year to raise funds to support the ski museum.
This year’s honored guest was Nelson Bennet, who served in the division and turned 100 years old this year. A group of 10 younger soldiers took part, though most of them preferred to use their snowboards over skis on the slopes. According to one of them, though he had a great time going down the mountain, the best part of the day was meeting the older veterans.
A banner printing firm can create decorations and other items that can make the special day even more meaningful for those who take part.
The division was formed back in World War II as an infantry unit consisting of well-trained soldiers who were skilled in winter warfare. They were chosen from among the country’s most experienced and best skiers and outdoor enthusiasts.
