North Conway marks Veterans Day

On the eleventh day of the eleventh month, residents of North Conway came out for Veterans Day to honor those who fought in armed conflicts, both past and present.

Following a parade that wound its way from John Fuller Elementary School on Pine Street along South Main Street and Norcross Circle, more than 300 people gathered in North Conway’s Schouler Park.

The parade included representatives from local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars branches, as well as state representatives, members of local scouting groups, and a number of veterans. It was led by a color guard, and included music from the Dr. Therese M. Davidson Kennet High School marching band. An air patrol squadron also took part.

After the parade, there was a 45-minute log ceremony at the park, led by emcee Lou Lavender, who is a veteran of the war in Vietnam. The crowd was led in several songs, including ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ and other patriotic numbers.

After that, there was a wreath-laying ceremony to honor those who gave their lives in service to their country, as well as a rifle salute and echo taps. The keynote speaker, U.S. Major General Frank McCarthy, gave his prepared remarks, which rounded out the event.

Brochure printers can add to Veterans Day services by crating event programs for those who attend to take home with them.
