North Conway class to point the way to successful orienteering
Knowing how to navigate with a map and compass can open up a whole new world for those wo enjoy spending time outdoors, and a North Conway workshop will offer hands-on experience in using these orienteering tools.
The learners who register for REI’s Backcountry Navigation Workshop will be taking to Cathedral Ledge State Park for a field outing, and here they will discover how to make the most from their map and compass. The difference between true north and magnetic north will be discussed, and declination will also be included in the class.
Once the group has covered the fundamentals, they will get some practice in using the skills they have learned. They will plan a route, and when it is time to go home, they will know how to read a topographic map, calculate declination, and have greater confidence in their compass skills.
The participants in the session are asked to meet at North Conway REI before its scheduled start time. Simple manuals that offer the basics of orienteering with a map and compass can be useful to the registrants in this sort of event, and stationery printers will be able to supply them.
This chance for members of the public to gain some additional outdoor skills will be held on June 21. It is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am.
