What's Happening in North Conway, NH…

Local company finds new way to hit the slopes

As of last month, a North Conway firm has begun to offer residents a different sort of ski experience.

Eastern Mountain Sports is now providing an opportunity to try out a type of skiing called ‘skinning’. Those who take part rent the gear from EMS, which offers several different options for guided outings. They can choose to form a group or have private lessons, which can be arranged seven days a week.

Participants get their equipment and then go to the base of Tuckerman Ravine for the climb upwards. For ‘skinning’, the skis have special bindings, known as an alpine touring binding system, which allow the heel to be lifted for the climb up the hill. When it is time to ski back down, the binding locks the heel into place as with a normal downhill binding.

The skis also have a nylon covering, allowing them to better grip the snow to the uphill climb. This is removed to allow the skis to glide over the snow for the downhill trip.

According to the EMS climbing school manager, Keith Moon, the uphill portion of the trip can be taxing, but it is important to enjoy this as well as the descent.

With a new opportunity like this, brochure printers can create pamphlets that give outdoor enthusiasts all the information they need.
