What's Happening in North Conway, NH…

Backyard bird count flies by for another year

North Conway residents recently took part in an annual events designed to enlist the public’s help in measuring bird numbers in their local area.

The New Hampshire Audubon Society recently held its February Backyard Bird Survey. This is held each year during the second weekend of the month.

Amateur and professional ornithologist alike took part by recording the species they observed, and also their numbers. This provides valuable data about bird populations and where they are located. For example, species such as northern cardinals, mockingbirds, tufted titmice, and mourning doves have shown up more and more frequently in these counts, which indicates that they have increased their northerly rage.

To take part, birders were asked to record the numbers and species that they saw in one sitting, and not tally together the numbers for the whole weekend. People could watch for as little or as long as they liked, so long as they recorded the time. They were asked to only record those birds they knew for sure they could identify, and not make any guesses. If any unusual species were seen, it was asked that they be documented, especially through the use of a photograph. Tally sheets for wildlife observation events such as this can be produced by a company that printings business forms.

It was also requested that the numbers of red or gray squirrels and hawks seen be tallied.
