Alpaca wool and animal manure become works of art and design at this year’s Fiber Arts Festival Omaha.
The festival celebrates the materials given to us by mother nature in the plants and animals around us, and how we use them in knitting, crafting and weaving.
During the two-day event, visitors can watch workshops on how natural fibers can be used, and natural fibers, accessories and equipment, and artworks will be available for purchase. There will be live acoustic music, old-fashioned games, and crafts for kids.
One of the artists scheduled to perform is Jim Schalles from Tallgrass Hearth and Home. Schalles specializes in straw and earth construction and plaster. During the festival, he will build a wall made of light straw clay, as per a construction tradition of Bavaria.
Part of the festival includes a virtual classroom. Over the course of several weeks instructors will be offering video demonstrations on how to create art from natural sources. The workshops include macrame, natural dyes, and embroidery.
Tickets are $10. In preparation for the event, the festival held a poster art contest to create a unique design for its catalog and various Promotional Products.
Fiber Arts Festival Omaha is scheduled for Saturday, August 1 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday, August 2 from noon to 4:00 pm at the Bancroft Street Market, 2702 S. 10 Street in Omaha.
