Adults, children and families can explore five museums with railroad history and attractions in Omaha and Council Bluffs next month, with buses and trolleys providing transportation to all five locations.
Parking is available in Lauritzen Museum and Durham Museum in Omaha, which are the museums with the largest lots. Three museums are located in Council Bluffs, four miles from Omaha.
The Lauritzen Museum in Omaha is a botanical garden that with a railroad area complete with bridges and building. It has two older locomotives to view, and a train ride that goes around the festival gardens. The gardens will have train-themed activities for kids and the Café will be open for lunch or a snack.
The Durham Museum in Omaha will have songs and entertainment by ‘Freight Train’ Frank. Visitors can view model trains at the House of Trains on Track Level. The Swanson Gallery will be transformed into several model train displays by local and state train clubs.
Railroad West Museum in Council Bluffs features different artifacts and displays of railroad lines that passed through Council Bluffs. It has model train displays, and the rail yards have old steam engines and club cars.
The Union Pacific Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs will have a special display called Wheels of War about conflicts between the railroad and the military. The Historic General Dodge House is the Victorian Home of railroad builder General Grenville M. Dodge, and opened as a museum in 1964 in Council Bluffs.
