A group dedicated to supporting community causes by bringing women together is hoping a night of dance will help athletes with disabilities.
Mom Prom 2020 combines music, dancing, and food in one event. The event is expected to attract about 300 other women 21 and older.
Mom Prom is a movement that began in 2006 in Michigan and has been spreading throughout the U.S., reaching Omaha in 2011. It is all about women getting together to have fun and raise money for local charities.
Proceeds from Mom Prom 2020 will go to Nebraska Adaptive Sports, nonprofit organization that funds the Red Dawgs wheelchair youth basketball team. Families that have children with disabilities sometimes face financial struggles, especially when it comes to enrolling their children in sports and physical activities. Wheelchair basketball is an uncommon sport so families often have to travel long distances just to find another team to play on – and to play against.
Tickets are $30. The event features a photo booth, dessert table, and music all night long. There is a fun dress code, as there is at all Mom Prom events. The event's website suggests to dress formal, or wear a dress from the 1980s, or sport a wedding and bridesmaid dress from the back of the closet.
