Friends and family of a former U.S. soldier, as well as members of the group Honor and Remember and the general public recently, came out to Brown Field in South Omaha to pay homage to a WWII soldier who had loved the game of baseball.
Elmer Wachtler, who had been drafted to play for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1944, had also been drafted by the United States army. He left to fight in the war and lost his life fighting in the Battle of the Bulge in 1945.
Mr. Wachtler’s son Jim, who was very young when he died and never got to see him play, came out from San Diego to take part in the ceremony. Patriotic music was played, and the Honor and Remember Nebraska group presented the family with a special flag to commemorate his father’s sacrifice.
Jim said he was both pleased and proud to have been able to participate, and he appreciated that so many had chosen to be involved in the day. His father’s name will be inscribed along with 39 other players who died during WWII on a plaque that has been placed in Brown Field.
