Omaha gardens to help feed its feathered friends

The winter season can be a tough time of the year for Omaha’s resident birds, and its citizen scientists have been invited to offer them a helping hand.

The families that take part in the class that will take place at Lauritzen Gardens will be using some simple, repurposed items to make winter feeding stations for winter birds. Both members and non-members are welcome, and a discount will be available to those who currently hold a membership.

The families will be supplied with a recycled tin can as well as some ribbons, strings, beads, and paint so they can create a custom look for their individual project. The activity will run for one and a half hours, and attendees will be able to linger at the venue to explore the gardens in their winter dress. Admission is $25 for non-members and $15 for members.

Feeding birds can be a fun activity for kids and parents to enjoy together. Organizers of workshops that introduce some of the basics of birding will be able to order field guides, species checklists, and other items from a local printing services company.

This workshop for Omaha families will be taking place on February 11. It will kick off at 10:00 am, and more information for any interested parents is available on the Lauritzen Gardens website.
