Omaha combination class to introduce fungi forging
Fungi are a wild food source that can be nutritious and delicious, and anyone who would like to find out how to forage for them may want to sign up for an early May workshop.
The class coming up at Omaha’s Lauritzen Gardens will provide an introduction to the art and science of ethical foraging, and it will utilize both classroom and in field learning. It will open with an introduction to fungi and what makes them different to plants and other organisms, after which the the group will head outdoors for some hands-on learning.
The activity will offer trips for identifying some of the most common edible species, and the attendees will learn why being able to do this is so important. The walk will last for approximately one hour, during which time the participants will hunt for mushrooms and then apply their newly acquired ID skills. The iNaturalist app will be introduced, and the registration fee is $20 for the general public, or $15 for those who have a membership of the Gardens.
Since knowing how to identify specimens is important, basic ID guides that include full color photos and other graphic design elements can be crafted by area printers for events like this.
“An Introduction to Fungi: Mushroom Identification and Foraging” is a combination of a lecture and an outdoor workshop, and is scheduled for Sunday, May 7. Everyone who signs up is asked to arrive by 1:00 pm.
