South Raleigh is an older neighborhood where houses can be found for less than $100,000, even as prices climb in other areas. However, all that may soon change, as people move to the area, bringing new energy, and enthusiasm with them.
Jeremiah Smith told his realtor to find a freestanding, rundown building near downtown. In 2013, he purchased a warehouse located on South Saunders. Today, he operates his pest management business from the location, his wife runs her gourmet mushroom company there, and an artist also shares the space.
Also in the area, Trophy Brewing & Pizza Co.’s owners have sunk $2.3m into a 2.5-acre site near the intersection of Lake Wheeler and Maywood. They plan to build a brewery and restaurant they will call ‘Big Trophy’, which will complement another of the establishments that lies west of Raleigh’s downtown.
David Meeker, a partner in the Trophy enterprise, feels that the north and west sides are developed, the east side is full of young, energetic entrepreneurs, but the south is still much as it has been for the past 40 years. The neighborhood offers a stable and old-time environment to new arrivals, making it an attractive option for development.
Raleigh officials might consider working with brochure printers on Booklets describing the redevelopment of the area. They could make them available to commercial and residential realtors for presentation to prospective clients.Get a Free Quote for Booklets
