Two public libraries in Raleigh are celebrating good news.
The Leesville Community Library, which had closed in February due to a fire, was slated to hold a grand reopening on September 5. A puppet show, family storytime, and a performance by Fish the Magish were on the schedule.
In southwest Raleigh, staff and patrons of the Athens Drive Community Library are still looking forward to their party. They are celebrating the fact they were able to keep the branch, which is located on the Athens Drive High School campus, open after Wake County had considered closing it. A group of mothers organized the opposition to the closing, and were successful.
As part of the effort to help the library remain open, it has expanded its parking and operating hours, as well as adding staff. It has also increased the number of programs it offers to young people, from birth through the high school years.
The celebration at the Athens location is scheduled for September 12, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Activities planned include puppet shows, storytime, and scavenger hunts.
Library staff members could work with a banner printing company to create fun items to hang throughout the location to celebrate the branch's continued operation. They could also have a flyer printing company create mailers to residents outlining the new hours and additional features.
