German discount grocery store Lidl is hoping to open a store in Raleigh.
The chain has applied for a site in the Triangle area. It has begun planning the store, though it has yet to buy the property, which is assessed at approximately $2.5m.
A plan of the building and its accompanying landscaping will be considered April 7 by Raleigh's appearance committee. If the design is approved, the proposal will then go to the planning commission, and if the process continues successfully, construction could begin this summer.
Lidl is based in Germany, and is a direct competitor of Aldi, which already has stores in the United States. Like Aldi, Lidl takes a “no-frills” approach to the way it displays the goods it sells. It puts the products in the stores in the cartons they were delivered in, and customers take the product from there. Once the carton has been emptied, a full one is brought in to replace it. This system means the stores need only minimal staff, and can make a profit while the prices remain low.
The main difference between the two is that Lidl offers more branded products, and sources many of its products for the communities where its stores are located.
When the store opens, its managers might like to create festive Banners to celebrate the opening and welcome their first customers.Get a Free Quote for Banners
